Our Story
From The Love Stand to Ypsi CAN
Ypsilanti Community Action Network evolved from "The Love Stand," a community resource hub run by Tyler Weston at 315 N. River St, Ypsilanti. The Love Stand served as a gathering place and resource distribution point for the community, where people could connect, access resources, and build relationships.
The transformation began when a frequent visitor asked Tyler about the future of the Love Stand. This person worked with a federal program providing free nonprofit advice and saw potential for something bigger. Tyler expressed his frustration that resource information was locked in his head—people had to talk to him directly to access community resources. He wanted to network care providers in the community to reduce silos and increase efficiency.
After discussing the success of collaborative efforts like the 3-on-3 basketball tournaments, advisors independently confirmed the same direction: "If anybody asks what you're doing, just tell them you're a Community Action Network."
Tyler researched Community Action Networks and adapted the model to fit Ypsilanti's specific needs, creating an organization focused on community development rather than traditional poverty alleviation.
